Crisis support
While it is Coimisiún na Meán’s goal to keep the public protected from harm online, there may be times that it is not within our remit to take action for users.
If you are worried or distressed about something you’ve seen online, there are many other organisations that you may find helpful.
- If you or someone you care about are in immediate danger, the Gardaí are always the first port of call. You can call 999 or 112.
- Hotline.ie is Ireland’s national centre for combatting illegal content online. You can report concerns in respect of illegal content online, especially child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This service is secure, anonymous and confidential. Report at www.hotline.ie
- Bodywhys is the Eating Disorders Association of Ireland, and can provide non-judgmental and confidential support and information on +353 1 210 7906 or via their website.
- Samaritans Ireland is a listening service and has 24 drop-in locations across Ireland and Northern Ireland.
- Childline / Teenline are listening and texting services for children and young people.
- Spunout has a free 24/7 text message support service for young people, providing everything from a calming chat to immediate support for people going through a difficult time. Visit the website spunout.ie, or text 50808.
- Pieta House provides a range of services to individuals who experience suicidal ideation, engage in self-harm, or are bereaved by suicide. Visit the website www.pieta.ie, or call their free 24/7 crisis helpline 1800 247 247.
