Coimisiún na Meán is calling on children, parents, carers and teachers around Ireland to take part
This year’s Safer Internet Day takes place next Tuesday, 11 February. Co-ordinated here in Ireland by Webwise (the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Centre), 2025 marks the 22nd anniversary of this important EU-wide event.
The theme this year is incredibly topical, given the ever-shifting digital landscape; ‘Prepare / Protect / Thrive: Navigating Algorithms & Influencers’. Hundreds of children and young people will take part in initiatives around the country aimed at exploring these powerful parts of the online world.
Here at Coimisiún na Meán, we’re prioritising online safety. Last October, we adopted our Online Safety Code, which sets binding rules applying to video-sharing platforms who have their EU headquarters in Ireland. The Code introduces obligations on them to protect people, especially children, from harmful video and associated content. It forms part of our overall Online Safety Framework, which also includes the EU Digital Services Act and EU Terrorist Content Online Regulation.
To help support young people in understanding their rights online, we’ve also put together a whole host of guides and resources. Teachers and parents will find free guides, tips, videos and lesson plans there too.
In the meantime, be sure to check out Webwise’s Safer Internet Day hub to find out more about the day’s events, and to register your school / organisation.
