Learning & development

It is part of Coimisiún na Meán’s remit to promote, encourage and support learning and development in Ireland’s audio and audiovisual sector. We are committed to continually working in partnership with broadcasters and industry networks to address specific development needs that will enhance capacity in the sector.

As a regulator we do not deliver training and development activities ourselves. Rather we work with industry networks and representative organisations to provide suitable initiatives for their members. This approach helps the industry to remain sustainable, supports creativity and innovation, and works towards ensuring a thriving and diverse media landscape that reflects Irish society.

Sectoral Learning and Development Funding Programme

The Sectoral Learning and Development Policy provides the framework to enable us to strategically plan, support, measure and evaluate the continued growth of the broadcasting sector, through a variety of training, learning and development activities. In line with the Policy, we operate a funding programme each year. We engage with stakeholders on their development needs and offer successful applicants funding to deliver initiatives, training and/or mentorship activities.

Funding allocation

In 2024, €550k was allocated under the Sectoral Learning and Development programme. The funding was allocated to groups including: networks representing commercial and community media; industry-specific groups representing producers, animators and journalists; advocacy organisations; and groups promoting the Irish language. For example, one of the programmes we support sees ten graduates from across Ireland offered an internship in a local commercial radio station, while another programme offers training and support for young people from underrepresented, ethnic minority and low-income backgrounds.
